Habitat Heros #123: Maximizing Usable Space on Your Property

In this podcast you will soon realize its not about the acres you manage, but how you choose to manage the acres you have. Usable space on a property determines the amount of time game can and likely will spend on your property. This could also be understood as suitable acres for bobwhite quail habitat. The bobwhite quail is not a generalist species like whitetail deer, they require specific habitat to be able to survive and reproduce, without the specific habitat needs in place spatially, quail will be extremely limited. This can be seen all across the country in the historic range of the bobwhite quail.

In this podcast, we sit down with Kyle and Frank our bobwhite quail consulting biologist to better understand the foundation of quail or upland land management. Usable space has very similar key components no matter where you are located in the country. Without this base of understanding, the finer details and requirements are null and void. Useable space for bobwhite quail consists of bare ground, woody/shrubby cover, and forbs. These components have to be present in the landscape for quail to persist. The layout and spatial distribution of these key elements are critical as well to survival and high reproduction rates.

Remember, do not get caught up in the number of acres you can impact, rather the number of acres of usable space for the species you wish to promote. We hope you enjoy this podcast and continue to learn how to manage the land to promote species like the bobwhite quail.
